The Elwood House

The clients wanted to retain the front of the properties heritage features and build a contemporary open extension backed with large expanse of glass to bring the outside gardens into the house. Pushing the limits of interior space through the use of floor to ceiling glass openings, we sought to bring house and landscape into a higher unity. More than a composition on lines and planes, this residential design provides a framework for appreciating nature.

Through the use of a steal and glass structure we created a greater feeling of lightness and openness attaching to the solidity of the brickwork of the existing house. Environmental building and finishing products were used widely throughout to avoid as many chemicals and residues in the home. Victorian ash from sustainable re-growth forests used for flooring and finished with natural Danish water based matt finish with ZERO out gassing of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's). This finish is biologically degradable, sustainable and is harmless, even in direct contact with humans, animals and plants. Natural paint was used throughout which is non-toxic and has zero or very low VOC's. VELUX Skylights used are double-glazed; Argon gas filled and has a Low E3 coating. 5 star energy appliances used where possible along with new insulation in roof and walls throughout.

Full renovation of entire house, from solid plastering, inclusion of a new 3rd bedroom, with the backend of house removed and rebuilt. A new bathroom was installed, custom-built kitchen with Ceaserstone bench tops and splash backs, 5 star ducted heating installed in ceiling along with extensive attic storage. Full rewiring of the house including safety switches with cat 5 cabling throughout.
